From Vigo’s Christmas lights to the mediaeval splendour of Soutomaior Castle, this journey is meant to make every moment magical.

Christmas Tree in Vigo

Morning and Noon:

Explore Vigo‘s historic centre, including Plaza de la Constitución and Mercado de la Piedra, to experience the city’s marine culture. The historic fishermen’s homes and oyster kiosks here exude Galician authenticity. A guided tour of Vigo’s centre will take you to hidden corners and teach you about the city’s legends and traditions. To completely immerse yourself in our culture, visit one of the many restaurants in the old centre that serve Galician cuisine. We recommend Taberna A Pedra for its local cuisine, rustic environment, and convenient location.

Afternoon and night:

Prepare yourself for one of Galicia’s most anticipated spectacles when night falls: Vigo’s Christmas lights. Thousands of lights adorn the city, adding colour and enchantment to its streets. It begins on Príncipe Street and goes on to Gran Vía, where you can see the light tunnel and the Christmas tree. Visit the Christmas market, which is brimming with artisan vendors and mouthwatering regional fare, to cap off the day.

Guide´s tip: Follow the advice of the locals, who will be happy to assist you, to get the most out of the lights. Additionally, there will be guides ready to help you make the most of the experience by offering conventional or customised tours.

Day two: Santiago de Compostela, culture, history, and tranquilly.

Christmas in Santiago de Compostela.

Morning:

Santiago de Compostela is a city rich with history. Begin at the Plaza del Obradoiro, in front of the magnificent church, and immerse yourself in the pilgrim atmosphere that pervades every aspect of the city. A guided tour of the city’s principal attractions allows you to appreciate its mediaeval architecture and learn about its traditions, like the famed botafumeiro of the cathedral and the legend of the Apostle Santiago.

Midday:

Have lunch at the Mercado de Abastos, where Galician items take centre stage. From octopus to tetilla cheese, every area of the market invites you to experience Galicia in its most authentic form.

Afternoon:

After a leisurely meal, take your time meandering through the old center’s lovely lanes and corners. Santiago urges you to live in the moment, enjoying its cafes and the city’s relaxed pace.

Guide’s tip: The church of San Fiz de Solovio is particularly noteworthy because it is part of the city’s founding history and it houses very special nativity scenes at Christmas.

Day three: Soutomaior, a fairytale castle and nature.

Soutomaior Castle

Morning:

Visit the Soutomaior Castle, located just a few minutes from Vigo, to immerse yourself in history. Surrounded by gardens and vineyards, this mediaeval castle is ideal for a final morning spent connecting with nature and Galician history. From its beginnings as a fortification to its transformation into a castle, it held fascinating characters such as Pedro Madruga, who is thought to be Christopher Columbus, and the Red Marquise, whose stories deserve to be recounted. Furthermore, due to its geographical location, it is surrounded by a lovely garden including the Camellia Route, which includes particularly exquisite specimens of this plant, some of which are dedicated to important ladies in history.

The breathtaking views, magnificent level of preservation, and cultural and historical richness will make your visit an interesting and enriching experience.

Noon:

Arcade, a town well-known for its oysters and overall gastronomy, is nearby. It is also known for its spectacular natural surroundings, particularly Monte da Peneda, which is great for hiking. The Ponte Sampaio bridge is of outstanding scenic and historical value. This area is the ideal ending to this three-day getaway that will brighten your Christmas.

Guide’s tip: While in the castle, explore the gardens, search for mediaeval architectural details, and enquire about the legend of the castle ghost, “O Alemanote.”

This three-day excursion allows you to see Galicia in a conscious and respectful manner, enjoying its wonders without prejudice and with sensitivity to the environment and local community. Each region of Vigo, Santiago, and Soutomaior has unique traditions and breathtaking landscapes.
